We want new and different stuff. The most important thing that we want to see in your script is something new. Something beautifully original, Something unseen. That’s what anyone is looking for, so it’s really in your best interest anyway. Make us say “Huh, that’s interesting”.
This is the sense that “this could get made”. There are concrete considerations, such as number of characters, effects, locations. But there should also be a general concept that its a piece that will get made and will be sold. We will have limited resources, so keep that in mind.
Do these characters have an interesting obstacle to overcome, and how do they do it? We aren't looking for things that fit into the Field/Mckee/Snyder template. It's probably better if they don't. We need things that step away from convention. But we do need to care what happens next.
Is that a word? Probably not. Regardless, this is just a general term for our taste. We like it weird. It’s similar to Originality (See above) but has the added benefit of being entirely indefinable. Or is it "undefinable"?
We like to make up words. This pertains to your ability to create great characters. Does your story involve compelling characters that people care about? More importantly, will said roles be good enough to draw name talent? Good characters. Write us some of those.
Our favorite scripts will be stories we have never heard about people who are rarely portrayed in film. Stories that have good roles for demographics which are not often seen in film are highly encouraged to apply. There are lots of good movies about white dudes already.

YOU GIVE US STORIES...
Maine has beautiful locations, a talented and professional crew, and a mystique that brings millions of tourists to our fair home every year. Our film production community is growing quickly, and we need films to make. That's where you come in!
We want your screenplays and pilots. We want films that we can make here in our wonderful state, bold and original stories that will take advantage of everything Maine has to offer as a film-making destination. Give us something interesting we can make here, and we will make it.
...WE MAKE YOUR MOVIE
Here's where it gets interesting! One of the winning scripts will be selected for production. This production will be funded by the application fees from the contest. Our goal and our hope is that there will be enough money over and above the cash awards, paying readers, and small amount of overhead, to finance a Maine film production, using the talented cast and crew available to us right here in the Pine Tree State.
MFI will collaborate directly with the winning writer, inviting them to participate in every step of the process. It might be a five hundred dollar short. It might be two hundred thousand dollar feature. The scope of the production depends on the number of entries we receive.
Our goal with MFI is to reward daring screenwriters and support local film artists. We want to encourage making movies in Maine by making a movie in Maine…maybe your movie!
Allen Baldwin, the director of the Maine Film Initiative, has been making films in Maine for almost twenty years. Most recently, he was a producer of Neptune, which screened at major festivals including Slamdance, Nashville, and Atlanta in 2016. Readers for the Maine Film Initiative will come from the Maine writing community and the Maine film community. If you would like to be a reader for MFI, send an email expressing your interest and outlining your background to email@example.com.
